Music for the Ceremony
To pick music for your ceremony, you need to know what it's going to look like.
For example, many people have music as they bride walks down the aisle. But perhaps you aren't planning to have anyone walk down the aisle. If you marry in a church, you might have organ music but there are several options you could consider. You could choose a choir or a string quartet. You could have music as the guests enter and sit down, or before the ceremony begins when everyone is seated.

Live Music vs. a DJ
At the reception, music is more to keep everyone entertained and to provide atmosphere.
People want to get up and dance, or at least have music they can enjoy while they eat and chat. The major decision for your reception is whether to have live music or hire a DJ.
The first thing to consider is the price. How much are you willing to pay for your reception music? Bands obviously have more people than a singer or a DJ, and everyone needs to be paid fairly. DIY Reception Music
Of course, you don't have to have either a live act or a DJ.
If you're trying to keep costs down, consider being in charge or the music yourself. If the venue has the audio equipment, you could just plug in an iPod or laptop and start your wedding playlist.
If it's a particularly small wedding, you might only need a decent set of small speakers. Of course, the downside is that your playlist doesn't react to what your guests like in the way that a DJ would. But you can ensure you have all your favourite music, and perhaps put someone in charge of playing "DJ" for the night.
