Being asked to be a bridesmaid for a best friend or family member is a wonderful gesture, an honour in my books. You can’t wait to be part of their special day as they become a Mrs. buuut it does mean you have a lot of responsibility on the wedding day, not to mention leading up to it!
You have to help the bride have a wonderful and calm day that she will never forget. It can mean months of planning before the big day and if they turn into a bridezilla, it will be a painful time for you that you have to stick out.
You also need to make at least a little effort on your appearance so that you look great on the wedding day. After all, the photos are going to be everywhere, so you want to look your best!
Here are some essential tips for bridesmaids to look flawless on the wedding day.
Get your dress altered
Going to choose your bridesmaid dress will be a stressful day you, trust me, I've helped with dress sessions.
You and the other bridesmaids may have to try on a few dresses before you can decide on one which looks nice on everyone and fits what the bride-to-be is looking for.
Once you have got the dress home, you need to consider altering it so that you will look great on the day, and be more comfortable. A lot of bridesmaids leave the length and then end up tripping over on the day (that is my worst nightmare) so please, get it shortened to the right length. You may want to get it altered around the waist or the bust as well if it doesn’t fit correctly; you don’t want to look back at the photos and feel like it swamped your waist or was too tight on your bust. Remember always to go for an accurate size when you do choose the dress - you may not want to ask for a bigger size due to embarrassment (seriously, we've all been there) but you will regret it if you can’t fit in the dress on the wedding day!
You can find a local seamstress who can alter it for you so that you look (and feel) flawless on the wedding day!
Change your diet
If you don't like the way you look in photos and sincerely want to look different for the wedding day, there's no shame in making a few changes in the kitchen.
You should look at your current diet and decide where you can make cutbacks: you could currently eating too much sugar and bad fats which are causing you to put on weight or cause skin flare ups. You should cut these out and replace them with plenty of fruit and vegetables, and water. You may want to find a specific weight loss plan to follow to ensure you lose any unwanted pounds before the wedding. Ideally (and of course depends on your schedule) you should start doing at least 20 minutes of exercise a day in the run up to the big day.
Changing your diet will not only ensure you maintain a healthy weight for the wedding day, but it will also help your skin to stay in a good condition too.
Decide on makeup before
You need to decide whether you are going to do your own makeup or get a professional for the wedding day, and give notice!
You should talk to the bride to see how much the makeup artist will charge to do your makeup on the wedding day- they might not have time to do everyone if there are several bridesmaids. If you are going to do your own makeup, you need to have a plan sorted before the day and you should have a trial run before the big day so that you can experiment with different styles, and see what you love best. You don’t want to regret your makeup choice on your big day. And if possible you should buy some new products so that the makeup you use is in a good condition, plus who doesn't love new makeup?
Here are some tips on doing your own makeup on the wedding day.
Get your hair trimmed
To keep your hair healthy, you should get it trimmed regular, it will ensure that any split ends are removed before the wedding day.
From around six months before the big day, you should start going to get it trimmed every six to eight weeks. It will make sure it stays in a good condition for the wedding and then you should make sure you condition your hair the night before the wedding because then you won’t have frizzy hair on the wedding day.
But remember, you should avoid washing it on the actual morning as it will be a lot harder to style.
Work on your skin
Who doesn't want glowing skin, even if it isn't your wedding?
You don’t want to look back at the photos and find that your skin looked anything less than amazing. You should book in for a facial before the big day to get your skin in a great condition. If you have bad skin, you may want to go for a facial treatment from a clinic with experienced surgeons such as Dr. David Halpern, or someone local.
Choose beautiful accessories for the dress
It’s so important that you accessorize well if you want to look amazing on the wedding day.
You should consider the neckline before choosing any jewelry to wear with the dress, this part can be tricky but it's key. You don’t want something which will ruin your whole outfit as it’s too long. You should also make sure you stick with the theme when you are accessorizing - talk to the other bridesmaids so that you will all look similar on the wedding day.
You should also go for a manicure before the big day (woo spa day!) You want your nails to look beautiful and look perfect with the dress, especially for close-ups. Choose a colour which will look fantastic with the dress!
Get enough sleep
You need plenty of shuteye in the run up to the big day.
You don’t want to have to hide bags under your eyes and dull skin as you have had little sleep, and you don't want to be grumpy. You need to start going to bed earlier in the weeks leading up to the wedding. As this article says, it will ensure you have plenty of energy and glowing skin on the big day. It’s such a long day that you need at least eight or nine hours the night before!
Even thought it's not your day, you'll still be a huge part of it and you want to look and feel your best. What's your number one go-to glam tip? Tell me below!
