15 Small Businesses To Support This Holiday Season

This is the year of shopping small for the holidays. I think a lot of us love gifting from local places every year, but the pandemic has certainly caused a surge in pushing to make all shopping happen this way. And if you’re able to support small businesses, it’s pretty amazing.

I love the little notes you get, and the touches they add to boxes. And I love that the sale can make someone’s day, versus being just a number.

I know it’s not possible for everyone, and that’s okay too! This year has been very hard, and sometimes the changes we strive to make just aren’t possible to stick to, especially around the holidays.

But if you are shopping small, and local (I am in Midland now, but this list has Toronto and Waterloo region too!) then I have a few items that I LOVE from small businesses that would make perfect gifts. All these items I have tried and would buy again, or gift! But might keep for me…gifting yourself is okay by me.

These are gifts for…cool people? I am not sure. I love them, there’s quite a variety, and the products I show are just a taste for most of them.

Let’s jump in!

Handmade Jungle

While this list has no order, it goes without saying that Handmade Jungle aka my BFF Vicki makes the most fun accessories – and prints and home things too! She uses clay the most, but she adds in different materials from time to time and is very keen to not have any waste. Also, a portion of her sales goes to a different charity every month!

GRL Beauty

The most recent addition to my skincare routine needed to be shared, as I know I have fellow skincare junkies out there and finding local products to love is a bonus. GRL Beauty is based in Toronto, made by women and uses 100% natural, cruelty-free, and non-toxic ingredients that truly work for all skin types. I am currently testing out this trio and it’s been about a week and a half so I can say as an early impression that I am into it. I love the idea of a booster, which is a product that you ADD to your cream to well, give it a boost. I’ll be doing a full post on this brand so keep an eye out!

The Pulp Studio

Another earring master, The Pulp Studio earrings are all wire and whimsical. I bought two pairs and already have my eyes on a few more. They’re gorgeous, but also so light and comfortable to wear!

Lunar Love Candle Co.

You KNOW I’m obsessed with candles and I am so glad I’ve found this company!!! I can confidently say the quality of these candles is ABOVE the ones you’re itching to grab for $5 on Black Friday. They burn so. damn. good! They’re soy wax and hand-poured. The smells are amazing, and while I have the fall collection I am itching to grab the holiday ones! She also does local pickup if you happen to live in the area. Obsessed with Lunar Love Candle Co.

Pretty Dope Accessories

When the founder of Pretty Dope Accessories reached out to me, I was in awe of how simple the idea is AND YET! It hasn’t been done before. It’s no secret I’m a cannabis fan, and I honestly keep my weed in like…a baggy? In my drawer? Sometimes glass jars if I’m feeling artsy. And now, I have this set! The bag locks odour in, but can also be locked, and the ceramic (!!!) tray is perfect to have on display, and handy to roll. If you’re bad at rolling, like me, the pre-rolls are super cute and everything matches. It’s genius.

Home By Nine

home_by_nine

I’ve talked about Home By Nine before, and love what Tom is doing to both end the stigma around mental health, raise awareness AND money. The clothes (and now hats!) are super comfy, practical and support the cause.

Good Grievings

This is for the witch on your list, and I mean that in the best way possible. Good Grievings has jewellery and home goods that have a dash of magic in them. Kelsey works mostly with resin and creates ART. I have a few necklaces, but I think her geode coasters are such a good stocking stuffer.

BellaMiaSofia

I had been searching for a rose quartz bracelet FOREVER! But they can be quite expensive – like from box stores! Where I just know that care really hasn’t gone into them! BellaMiaSofia has a variety of different gems, but my personal fave is the mommy and me set that would be so damn cute for a babe’s first holiday. Like yes, I don’t have any use just yet, but a matching set?! ADORABLE.

Lazy Goat Ceramics

My favourite mug of 2020 is from Lazy Goat Ceramics!! Mine is HUGE but rest assured, you can get many different sizes. Laura makes more than mugs too and has a bunch of unique pieces. And if you live in the Angus/Barrie/Innisfil area, you can do free pick-up!

Take a Load Off Fannies

You saw me rave about this fanny on Insta, so of course, it had to make it to the list. Take a Load Off Fannies has a ton of fabric options to choose from, which is amazing, but the fact that they can create custom sizes is what seals the deal for me. They even have waxed options, which would help them be weather-proof!

Considerate Goods

This was actually a gift to me! For my birthday! Vicki picked up a mask (leopard, a new fave) and a matching scrunchie. I love a good match, whether it be a workout set or an accessory set. Considerate Goods are made in Toronto, and the mask is VERY comfy. and breathable! But safe too, of course.

No Borders Fitness

Now, this No Borders Fitness is located in Midland but I wanted to include it. Why? Fitness has been so important to me through the lockdown, and I admire Becky so much. She’s a small business owner which is tough right now, and on top of that, she’s teaching all these fitness classes! Multiple times a day!! I don’t know how she does it. But anyway, you can go into the studio (there are a ton of COVID protocols at play) or even join classes virtually. Would highly recommend looking into small gyms in your area and seeing if you can gift a few classes!

The Happy Buddah Soap Co.

I’m a sucker for anything maple, and this lip balm is…well..the bomb. Happy Buddah Soap Company Made from simple, natural, and organic ingredients (here in Midland!) you can also shop them online. Everything smells amazing, and it’s one of those gifts that just radiate that self-care energy that we alllllll need going into a fresh year.

Georgian Bay Threads

My fave hoodie and most comfy summer perfect tee are from Georgian Bay Threads, a company that’s all about showing love for our dear Georgian Bay. Think minimalistic love for the bay. Such a great gift for parents, or friends who cottage here!

Taylored To You

Another birthday gift because I am a basic bitch. I love a tumbler, it helps me stay on top of my water drinking which is a habit I try my best to keep up with. I find it SO much easier when I have a straw, and sadly my tumbler was lost to the abyss that is the office when we shut down. ENTER THIS CUSTOMIZED BB! Taylored To You (located in Barrie!) makes it ALL!

AND THAT’S IT!

A long one, I know.

If you STILL can’t think of a gift, here is a giant spreadsheet of women-owned businesses to browse!
