I love fall.

And if there’s anything I love more than fall, it’s probably weddings. So it should come as no surprise that while most people are excited for wedding season in the summer, I eagerly await the colder weather to bring on my daydreaming of darker hues and rustic touches.

This year I’ve teamed up with the National Bridal Show which is happening this weekend, September 15-17, to give 5 lucky readers (and hopefully future brides!) pairs of passes to attend the show in Mississauga and get some wedding inspo!

Before we get to that, let’s chat about 5 wedding trends that are going to be huge for fall – in no order, because I love all of them and they’ve reassured me that one day I will have a fall wedding.

Berry Tones

The lips, the flowers, the attire.

Berry is a fall fave of mine, and while it’s an easy colour to add to your theme, I’m especially fond of it for bridesmaid dresses.

A deep berry is such a flattering colour that photographs beautifully! It does add a feel of drama to the photos, especially when photographed with the bride on her white gown. I also think that the colour berry has such a luxurious feel.

If a berry suit makes you shudder, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, then having your man and his groomsmen in suits with berry ties would help tie the look together. I’m partial to a navy suit, but grey and brown go with berry really well without making it look like too harsh of a contrast.

If you happen to be a fan of rose gold (who isn’t?!), berry compliments it amazingly and is a great way to add some sparkle to your colour theme.

Falling for Florals

The colour options are endless, and I love when brides add the darker blooms to their bouquets, it adds depth and gives it a slight touch of edginess without verging on goth feeling. Unless that’s what you’re going with, then goth away!

In terms of shape, cascading bouquets are still having their moment and I am here for it.

Something about these carefree (yet carefully constructed) bouquets feels more organic and less staged that adds to the rustic feel that always comes around with fall weddings.

Ribbons are also an amazing way to add an extra something to your flowers, matching the color to your bridesmaids or to another one of your wedding colours. Silk ribbons photograph beautifully as well, especially with their slight movement. Remember: you want your ribbons long enough to be seen, but not dragging too much that you trip on them!

Tasty Touches

Goes without saying that when I think fall wedding trends I think naked wedding cakes, even though they’ve been growing in popularity for any season.

Decorated with wooden toppers, berries and minimal icing, these cakes are usually smaller which means the couple opts to have another dessert for the guests like cupcakes or donuts.

These cakes aren’t layered in fondant and icing, which bodes well with fall wedding décor. You wouldn’t have mason jars as your center pieces and then a cake that looks like Cinderella dreamed it up.

The Dress

Even though I fully believe that this is nothing a warm apple cider can’t fix, fall does mean that the temperatures are going to drop. And that means it might not be the best season for strapless and bare shoulders in general.

There are two trendy ways to layer up this season.

A full skirt, tulle is my pick, paired with a sweater looks beautiful and will keep you toasty. You could either layer the sweater on top, to be able to take it off for the reception, or have a two-piece dress for your day.

Another way is to have your dress of choice, with a flannel or jean jacket paired for photos!

This is very much the more casual option of the two, even though I love lace with denim, and is a way for you to stay warm in the dress of your dreams no matter what style you go for.

Décor Details

I think it would be some sort of wedding sin to have a fall wedding and not make use of what Mother Nature gives us this time of the year!

Building center pieces up is a stunning way to add height to your tables, and using sticks means that the leaves changing colour are décor in themselves.

You can also make use of lanterns, candles glowing of course, to warm up the space. And pumpkins of different sizes certainly add character.

You can keep them natural, or they do paint easily if you’re up for some DIY time with your friends and family. Since they have so many different sizes, you could go for larger ones as decorations, or even the smaller ones as name holders!
